Q&A: I’ve Been Invited to a Wedding. When Should I Start Looking for a Suit?

14 Jun 2025 9:30 AM | Anonymous

Whether you're the groom, a groomsman, or attending as a guest, getting your suit right for a wedding is key. The timing of when to begin shopping can make all the difference in how confident and comfortable you feel on the big day. Here's what you need to know.

For the Groom

As the groom, your suit sets the tone. Whether you're wearing a tuxedo, a formal three-piece suit, or something more relaxed, the goal is to look polished and feel prepared.

Custom Made: Start the process at least 8 to 12 weeks before the wedding. Custom suits require time for fittings, fabric selection, and adjustments. You may need multiple fittings to get the look exactly right. Starting early ensures you are not rushed and gives you time to coordinate with the wedding party.

Off the Rack: If you're purchasing off the rack, allow at least 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding. You’ll still want time for tailoring, which is essential for achieving a clean fit. Suits rarely fit perfectly off the hanger, so factor in time for sleeves, pant hems, or waist adjustments.

For the Groomsmen

Coordination is everything for groomsmen. The groom or wedding planner may select a specific suit or color palette, so waiting too long can limit your options.

Custom Made: Plan to start the process 10 to 12 weeks out to ensure your suit matches the wedding theme and arrives on time. Some tailors offer group discounts or packages for wedding parties, but these take time to organize.

Off the Rack: Give yourself at least 4 to 6 weeks, especially if you are matching others in the wedding party. Even when renting, early selection ensures size availability and allows for basic alterations.

For the Guests

If you’ve received a wedding invitation and plan to dress appropriately, consider the formality of the event and the venue.

Custom Made: If you're opting for a custom suit for the occasion, begin the process 8 weeks ahead of the wedding date. Even if you don’t need multiple fittings, this allows ample time for production and delivery.

Off the Rack: Start looking for your suit 3 to 4 weeks in advance. This gives you time to find a style that suits the dress code and to have it altered if needed. For black-tie weddings, rental tuxedos may require earlier reservations, especially during peak wedding season.

Leaving your suit decision to the last minute can lead to limited options, rushed tailoring, and added stress. A well-fitted suit isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling confident and prepared for one of life’s most memorable events.  Whether you go custom or off the rack, giving yourself plenty of time is the best way to ensure you’re dressed to impress.
